Building background
Dorset House is a Grade II listed Art Deco building in Marylebone, listed since March 1998. Completed in 1935 to designs by T. P. Bennett & Son, with modernist architect Joseph Emberton consulting for developer Claude Leigh, it carries reliefs by sculptor Eric Gill.
It occupies an entire street block bounded by Gloucester Place, Marylebone Road, Melcombe Street and Glentworth Street, close to Baker Street and Marylebone stations and Regent’s Park.
The Historic England listing describes flats above an underground parking garage, with a petrol filling station, restaurant and parade of shops forming the ground-floor perimeter. Film-makers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger had their production company offices here in the 1940s.
Today, the commercial accommodation mixes food and beverage, car rental, health and beauty and everyday retail, mostly across ground and lower ground floors, with some mezzanines, plus a large basement car park and a corner fuel station.
